Optimizing your pages for search engines means that your pages are tuned for the search engine algorithm. Each of your web pages presents the search engines with exactly what it is looking for. As a result, your site will be placed as close as possible to the coveted number one spot in the search engine results pages.
Search engines that rely primarily on the content of a page can be influenced by optimizing web page content for your targeted keywords.
Other search engines rank primarily by "off page" content. That is, they examine how other pages (from your site and other sites) refer to your pages. Getting other sites to link to your site is critical.
Different search engines have different targets for what constitutes the optimal page content. And, this often changes for each search engine over time.
So, the same group of pages will be ranked one way by one engine and another way by another engine. Some time later, when their ranking algorithms change, they will rank pages differently.
Search engine optimization is a never ending struggle to keep on top of the current algorithm for each search engine.

Search Engine Ranking
Every keyword or keyword phrase is contained in hundreds, if not thousands or millions, of web pages.
Your web pages are examined by a search engine's "spider" or "bot" to record certain aspects of your web pages. The search engines may also record how other pages (from your site and other sites) refer to your pages.
Search engines uses a complex set of rules (algorithms) to determine the subject of each of your web pages. Some rules evaluate the content of you page while other rules evaluate how other pages refer to your page.
Each search engine gives your page a rating or measure of importantce for a number of keywords.
When a person enters a search phrase into the search engine, the search engine displays the pages that it thinks (according to its algorithms) are most relevant to that search phrase. The first pages it displays are judged to be the most relevant.
A lot of effort goes in to creating and modifying web pages to make them look relevant to search engines for important keywords.
