The Internet includes billions of web pages and sites that number well into the hundreds of millions.

You are probably familiar with search engines. You enter a search term and find out that there are half a million pages that include that term. The goal of search engines is to provide you with the pages that are most likely to satisfy your information needs near the top of the search results.

Directories operate somewhat differently. They include web sites in topical areas. Each directory has categories and sub-categories. These categories can go through several levels to get to the specific topical area you are interested in.

In this way, Internet directory sites can organize websites so you can find the information you want as you "drill down" through the directory site's categories.

Some directory sites also index sites based on keywords very similar to the search engines. You can then enter a keyword phrase to find the exact information you wish.
