Optimizing Web Site

Optimizing Web Pages

The reason for optimizing your web pages is to try to get your pages displayed on the first page of a search result page.

Say you're searching for "used cars". Most people only look at the first page of search results presented by a search engine. If your site is not listed on the first page, you will lose a lot of potential visitors.

Search engines rank web pages (at least in part) by the content of the page. Content can be analyzed by search engines based on a number of factors. Many people believe some of these factors are:

  • Title text -- this is the text that appears in your TITLE meta tag.
  • Other meta tag content -- this includes the KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTION meta tags.
  • Keyword density -- essentially, a percent that describes the ratio of the number of times a keyword appears on a page to the total number of words on that page.
  • Keyword location -- the density of keywords in the upper quarter of your page is thought to be more important than the density of keywords in other parts of your page.
  • Heading content -- use of keywords in headings (e.g., <H1>Keyword Phrase</H1>)is often seen as important
  • Link text -- use of keywords in the clickable link text. Pages on your site should like to other pages using link text containing keywords that describe the content of that page. So, do not use "Home" for the link text back to your main page.
  • Off-page content -- this usually means the link text used in links from other sites that point to your site. You have control of this when requesting reciprocal links.

The closer your web page conforms to the targets identified by a search engine, the more likely your page will be ranked near the top of the search results listing.

Website

A website is a collection of web pages that present information to those viewing your site. Each page may present text, images, sound and video files, and other types of content.

Each website has a home page. This is the page you reach when you type in the site's URL (e.g., http:/www.mysite.com) without a page name. This home page has links to other pages within the website that explain details of a specific topic.

A website usually has a number of pages related to a subject area. Each page may cover or describe a particular aspect of that subject. If a "sub-topic" is broad enough, it also can branch out to additional pages that cover aspects of that sub-topic in more detail. It's almost like having a family tree, with a main truck and various branches.

The "Website Generation System" I developed dynamically combines small snippets of web pages together to present a web page with information that reflects the web page name.

This makes constructing websites easier while at the same time ensuring that the information presented is closely related to what the end user is looking for.
